How to Replace an audi car key case G28 Engine Speed Sensor

Charles the Humble Technician shows how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. The sensor is located near the transmission's edge just above the flywheel gear. It sends a signal to the ECU via the grey wire (T55/49), then to the tachometer within the instrument cluster.

The grey wire is situated on the edge of transmission, above the flywheel ring. This sensor sends a signal via the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU then uses this information to control fuel, timig and boost. It also sends a signal to the G5 tachometer inside the instrument cluster.

The sensor serves as a reference to correlate with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu must be aware of when the crankshaft has reached TDC and also the position of the camshaft, in order to activate the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails the ECU will throw a P00160 code which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are not in sync, possibly indicating the chain stretching or a jump link on the upper chain of timing. The code won't show without the additional information supplied by other sensors (G4 or G40).

Testing is a bit tricky because there are two connector pins, and they have different functions however the best method to test it is to measure the resistance between the sensor and the ECU. It should read about 1000 ohms when it is operating at its maximum. Look for signs of coolant or oil in the connector bay if you have problems with this part.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, while accelerating at full speed from the highway paytoll, i experienced a big cut in power like the engine is out of gas or the injectors are not firing at all. This morning i pull out the spark plugs, 3 were drenched with gazoline the fourth one was dry. When I crank the engine with no sparks i put tissue on the top of each hole in the injector, the 3 drenched with gazoline leap out, however the 4th stays closed. I checked the ground connection of ECU pins 14,30, and 48/55. I got 0ohm. Therefore, i think the issue is somewhere else.

I also tried to reset PID without success. The car will start when the G28 is disconnected, but it is running fine with the G28 connected. However, the intermittent misfire problem continues to occur at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62) even when it is unplugged, shows temperatures of -49c. Also, i noticed that the gauge for oil pressure in the cockpit is showing 2 bar, whereas the actual pressure is 0.0 when i rev the engine.

I don't know what to do. I feel like i've pretty much eliminated everything else. I'm concerned that i may have missed something. Let me know If you have any suggestions! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 is activated by a signal by the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter functions similarly to the G4 sender, and both operate on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. It is easy to find the spare in a salvage shop or a parts store. It is easy to test them: simply switch your DMM into resistance mode and determine the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector's end facing upwards). They must be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

Our 20vt turbo (3B, AAN, ABY and ADU) engines have an ECU that needs to know the position and speed of the crankshaft to make decisions regarding fuel injector timing etc. It uses a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to achieve this. If you encounter a problem with either of these sensors, the diagnostic scanner will display the codes that could trigger an engine shut down.

The signs of a failed G28 sensor include an inaccurate rev counter in the gearbox and gears that shift faster than normal, and/or a misfire when you're in gear. If you are experiencing any of these issues, it is likely that your sensor is deteriorating and needs replacing. They're inexpensive and easy to locate especially in the case of a Bosch unit like ours. Alternatively, the GM version of this part is also a good choice.

5. Tachometer

A malfunctioning engine speed sensor could be the reason behind many issues in your car. It is a crucial part of your replacement audi key's transmission, because it communicates to the ECU about how fast or Audi Keys Replacement slow the vehicle's crankshaft is rotating. If this sensor fails, it will cause problems for the transmission and the rest of the car key replacement audi's components.

The G5 engine sensor is located near the edge of the transmission, just above the flywheel ring. It sends a signal via a gray wire to the ECU pin T55/49. The ECU then uses and processes the signal to control fuel, timig and boost, and also transmitting it to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster. You can test for sensor failure by examining the continuity of the sensor to the tachometer. Additionally, you can check continuity between pin T55/49 of the ECU and pin T6a/1 of the instrument cluster (trace [79]), and between pin T6a/1 as well as pin T26a/12. There should be an average resistance of 1000 ohms between these two points. This is the same across the Audi Tt Key Fob 80-100-200-RS2 model, ranging from the 1985 MC up to the 1997 UrS AN and 1995 RS2 DU So, you may find some good ones in wrecking yards.
